History of NR Studios Cheltenham, Exeter and Tattoo London Studios
NR Studios started as ‘No Regrets’, formed by Ben Lakin and his wife, Annie. Opening its first studio nine years ago on Cheltenham high street, it’s now one of the biggest studios in the UK with 13 resident tattoo artists. After building a reputation for high quality artistry and customer satisfaction levels, it expanded its studios to a new Exeter location. Now onto its third studio, our new tattoo shop London looks set to follow in the footsteps of its Cheltenham and Exeter counterparts.
Our bespoke designs cover a wide range of styles thanks to the knowledge and expertise of our artists. This includes trash polka, colour realism, neotraditional, traditional, blackwork and geometric designs. One of the most popular modern sensations in the tattooing world is black and grey realism, and we have a trio of artists at our Cheltenham studio (Bacanu Bogdan, Danny Romano and Georgi Kodzhabashev) bringing the highest of standards to this style of artistry.
We never shy away from inviting skilled guest artists to join our talented resident artists, believing as a team we can learn from each other’s unique artistry. We’ve had guest artists from all around the world including Mike Boyd, Alex Petcu and Michael Tauget. Not only do we love collaborating but our clients love the fresh ideas our guests bring to the studio. You can find out who’ll be joining us next on both our website and social media pages.
Our experienced front of house team can knowledgeably support you when you come in to find out about our services as well as being on hand with a supply of tea and coffee. This is an essential part of the process, especially when you first pop in to see what our services are all about. The theme of our studio décor is ‘effortless and timeless’ with copper plated tables, steel cupboards and bare filament bulbs bringing a stylish ambience to our working environment. We believe in providing comfort for both client and artist, ensuring our settings are light and spacious, and comfortable seating is provided at tattoo stations and waiting areas. Artist’s work zones have been designed around their needs including some of the best tattooing chairs on the market, by Tatt Soul. Our relaxed environment puts clients at ease, whether you’re a first time client or a seasoned tattoo veteran.
NR wouldn’t be where it is today without the support we’ve received from brands and companies who recognise our artist’s for their talent, potential and the value they bring to the industry. Our artists achieve such high quality work by using some of the best materials on the market including World Famous Ink, Hustle Better Deluxe and Sorry Mom.
Our Tattoo London Studios
Over the last decade, the tattooing industry has grown and developed like never before. Its focus has shifted towards the endless possibilities you can achieve when translating artwork to skin. Collaborations between client and artist is the key to embracing ideas and creating a work of art. The space between client and artist is blended through the understanding of each other’s concepts as well as offering a skin area for artist’s to work freehand. Our London tattoo studio artists work closely with you to create something special.
Our Tattoo London Artists:
NR studios enables its resident artists to explore their talents and skills by pursuing the areas they’re passionate about. We believe this develops their artistry by bringing out the best in creativity. Fully immersing themselves in a niche, they’ll provide the highest quality service and designs. We have a whole team of artists available, each with their own set of skills.
Two of our tattoo London artists are Ryan Smith and Razvan Rosca.
Ryan Smith: Ryan is one of our tatoo artist London studio team. He’s created an outstanding niche by combining mandala/hennism with colour realism. Known as ‘The Scientist’ for the conceptual scientific genre he created, his work stands out from the crowd for its intricate linework and clean, bold colours. By experimenting with both colour and style, Ryan creates completely unique pieces every time.
Razvan Rosca: Another of our talented artists, Razvan forged a different path through his pioneering A-void project. These large-scale, abstract designs give the distinct impression of pencil work or charcoal. Adding a dark twist to his pieces, he specialises in both realism and black and grey. Taking influences from nature and the human mind, Razvan has quickly become one of NR’s most popular black and grey artists.
NR’s London artists comprise of a variety of skills, with Ryan and Razvan making up just a small selection of our talented team. Other niches you can find at our London tattoo studios include large-scale characters, watercolour freehand, illustrative and personal artwork amongst styles such as black and grey, blackwork and realism.
The Tattooing Process
NR’s clients are able to follow the process with understanding and ease thanks to the enquiry process implemented by Ben and Annie. Our website is easy to navigate, taking you through the impressive portfolios of each of our resident artists. You can also complete an enquiry form which will help you to share ideas or preferences. Although our artists can create designs in multiple styles, they each have a specialist area. Therefore, if you’re not sure which artist is best for the style you need, let us know your idea, and we can recommend the right artist for you.
Our process is easy to follow:
- Take a look at our website and all of our artist’s impressive portfolios.
- Fill out our enquiry form by sharing your idea or stating a preferred artist.
- We’ll offer you a free consultation in which you’ll meet your artist and discuss your ideas in a pressure-free environment. Meeting face to face will not only relax you but help ideas to take shape and give you a clearer picture of both price and timings.
- You can then book in with your chosen artist, and we’ll let you know available dates. A deposit is taken on booking, but please explore our finance option if this is something you would like to do. Alternatively, if you need more time to think about it, you can go away and think about what you’d like to do.
We believe our clients should receive all the information available to them to make an educated decision about their tattooing choice. Our modern diary applications mean customers can easily get in touch for more information or to discuss any issues. It’s important you’re well-informed before making such a personal decision.
Tattoo Finance: We want everyone to have access to high quality tattoos, so we offer a finance option on our services. Luxury shouldn’t come to the few, and we appreciate that our customers come from all walks of life, which is what makes our job so rewarding. We use Omni Capital and can give clients the option of spreading costs over 6, 12 or 24 months. Our front of house team can help you with this and guide you through each step of the application. We’ll be able to tell you quickly whether you qualify and ensure the process is as hassle-free as possible. We also have a dedicated section of our website which explains your options in more detail, giving you all the facts about the process in clear and concise terms. There’s also a handy calculator for you to work out the best choice for you.
As the tattoo industry has evolved, its online presence has grown, and the popularity of conventions has exploded.
Our artists have a combined Instagram following of over 150,000 people. Social media has become part of every industry, including tattooing, giving people easy access to both ideas and information more easily than ever before. Platforms such as Instagram and Pinterest help clients to find great ideas by searching for artwork created by hundreds of artists from all around the world. Sharing ideas and concepts opens the doors for greater creativity with the artwork speaking for itself online. It’s also allowed a new online audience to get a glimpse into the industry, gathering new fans by the impressive range of possibilities out there. On NR Studio’s social media pages, you’ll find plenty of information including upcoming guest artists, the latest artwork, diary openings, events, upcoming convention dates and competitions.
Tattoo conventions are more popular than ever with tens of thousands of people descending on some of the biggest events. For many, it’s a chance to see hundreds of world-renowned artists showcase their work. Events can last for several days and organisers put on an extravaganza for everyone to enjoy including live music and competitions, as well as the luxury of seeing prestigious artists create a diverse range of pieces. From our London location, you can even visit close by conventions, including the popular London Tattoo Convention which is held once a year.
The competitions hosted at each convention give tattoo artists a perfect opportunity to get recognition for their skills by showcasing their work to a large audience. Categories won often include ‘Best of the Day’ and ‘Best Black and Grey’, amongst others. We can proudly say our artists have won several awards across a range of categories, proving their talents aren’t just recognised by clients and NR Studios. Ryan Smith even won Best of Day and Best of Show awards at some of the most prestigious conventions, and he recently collaborated with our London studio artist Jay Freestyle at the Milano Tattoo Convention, winning Best of Show.
Previously, the ‘lone wolf’ stigma has been unfairly attached to the tattooing industry. Working hard to shed this image, collaborations are part and parcel of creating high quality skills, helping to bring about fresh concepts and unique ideas. Great artists actively seek out other artists to work with, advancing their skills and artistry to the next level. We encourage collaborations here at NR, providing endless combinations for presenting unique work that’s never been seen before. We aim to continually raise the bar for quality and creativity, achieving the high standards we can.
The Future of NR Studios
The popularity of tattooing is only increasing, meaning the number of artists and studios available is only set to grow. Clients deserve the best experience when making a decision which is so personal to them. Our level of customer service sets the standard high, setting us apart from other studios. We put client comfort and needs at the heart of our services, even providing facilities to listen to music through wireless earphones or ‘Netflix and chill’. You’ll find a flat screen TV at each tattooing station, giving you a chance to relax during all of your sessions.
We’ve always considered expansion a staple part of the plan here at NR Studios, originally setting high artistry standards in Cheltenham before setting our sights on Exeter. When Ben and Annie were looking at a third location, it seemed only right for the next step to be the Big Smoke, having built up such a great reputation in our previous studios. We’re proud to present our London tattoo studios on Minerva Street in the heart of Hackney. We want this studio to become a pioneering part of the tattoo industry, set in one of the most groundbreaking artistic capitals in the world. We have both an onsite photographer and gallery curator, allowing our studio to close the gap between traditional art mediums and tattooing.
